Chief Operating Officer

Job description

  • To lead the Chief Operations Office (COO) unit consisting of Operations, Integration and Change and IT, developing an integrated COO function that supports Absa Regional Office with key capabilities

  • To be accountable for the aggregate plan and delivery of systems, operations and the general operating model

  • To leverage the advantages of bringing together the operational expertise and drive through more efficient ways of working

  • To contribute to the leadership, with dedicated and singular focus on execution and delivery

Main accountabilities

  • Translate strategic objectives from regional office and country into tactical delivery with mechanisms for key measurements in place to monitor progress
  • Direct the effective operational management of the Operations, IT and Treasury Operations in country to agreed service and cost targets
  • Ensure that local change projects are delivered in line with the group projects
  • Implement the COO operating model
  • Develop a view of change across the countries and ensure delivery and embedding of benefits
  • Drive the business operating and technology models
  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders to ensure correct focus
  • Share and develop ideas and solutions with colleagues across the business
  • Be committed to championing the business and cultural changes
  • Provide clear direction on strategic goals, translation and prioritisation into business and performance measures
  • Lead, inspire and coach a team of high calibre professionals, creating succession to key roles and enhancing the in country management capability
  • Live group behaviours and inspire others in working together to achieve the strategic visio



  • A bachelor’s degree from a recognised university
  • MBA – Preferred
  • Project Management certification


  • Experience in leading large scale transformational change projects and budgets
  • Strong people management experience

  • Track record of leading high performing teams in a matrix organisation

  • Knowledge of process re-engineering

  • Sound knowledge of Governance and Control, Financial Crime and Fraud Management

  • Management and knowledge of payments risk and systems

  • Knowldge of IT systems and digital infrastructure

  • Experience of operations management at a senior level

  • Track record of driving efficiencies through automation and process re-engineering

  • Solid experience of internal and external key stakeholders such as board regulators

  • Experience in automation of key operational processes

  • Solid experience of continuous improvement in the customer experience
