Diagnostic Radiologist

Overall

A vacancy exists for a Diagnostic Radiologist,based at Gaborone Private Hospital/Medical Imaging Botswana, reporting to The Hospital Manager.The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) section of the Radiology department which includes interpretation/reporting of MRI images and to supervise and ensure that all patient procedures and management protocols are complied with and that standard and patient-specific MRI protocols are followed.He/she should ensure that strategic objectives are met by supervising,motivating and support direct reports.

Critical Outputs:

Ensure effective management by

  • Performing or interpreting the outcomes of diagnostic imaging procedures including magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), computer tomographic (CT) imaging,fluoroscopic,mammography and ultrasound studies.
  • Develop or monitor procedures to ensure adequate quality control of images
  • Confer with medical professionals regarding image-based diagnoses
  • Document the performance, interpretation, or outcomes of all procedures performed

Ensure optimum operational efficiency by

  • Instructing radiologic staff in desired techniques,positions or projections
  • Prepare comprehensive interpretative reports of findings
  • Evaluate medical information to determines patient's risk factors,such as allergies to contrast agents,or to make decisions regarding the appropriateness of procedures
  • Participate in continuing education activities to maintain and develop expertise

Ensuring effective people management by

  • Communicating examination results or diagnostic information to referring physicians,patients and sometimes families
  • Provide counselling to radiologic patients to explain the procedures, processes, risks, benefits, or alternative procedures or studies available locally or else-where
  • Establish or enforce standards for protection of patients and personnel
  • Participate in quality improvement activities including discussions of areas where risk of error is high

Ensuring effective patient data processing by

  • Obtaining and recording patients, histories as provides by the referring clinicians, from previous imaging studies or patient interviews
  • Review, store or transmit images and information using picture archiving or other information storage facilities available

Ensuring effective governance by

  • Scheduling examinations and in collaboration with the control radiographer,assign and supervise personnel
  • Implement protocols in areas such as drugs,resuscitation, emergencies, power failures, and infection control
  • When teleradiology facility is installed, serve as an offsite teleradiologist for facilities that do not have on site radiologist
  • Ensuring full compliance to national medical regulations

Requirements

  • Degree in Medicine and post graduate masters degree in Diagnostic Radiology
  • Two or more years experience in interpretation of MRI images and supervision of MRI examinations
  • Comprehensive knowledge of other radiological procedures including, but not limited to reporting CT scans, mammograms and plain radio-graphs, perform and interpret fluoroscopic and ultrasound studies
  • Understanding of the private healthcare industry, its challenges and role players would be an advantage
  • Must have a valid registration with Botswana Health Professionals Council (BHPC) or equivalent registration in the country where they are practicing
  • Must be of good conduct and a good team player
